Get to know Wheel Head of Product, Tulsi Dharmarajan!
What’s your role at Wheel?
At Wheel, my role is Head of Product. I shape our platform strategy and tactics to create a best-in-class virtual care infrastructure platform that makes a meaningful change in healthcare.
Each day I work with innovative healthcare companies (prospects & clients), clinicians, and internal stakeholders to inform the problems we want to solve and where we’re going next.
What’s your background? What did you do before working with Wheel?
I was born in Chennai, India. I grew up in India and did my higher education in New Delhi, India. I majored in mathematics but soon realized that abstract mathematics couldn’t get me the impact I desired. I’ve worked with technology from a young age and just had a natural inclination to build stuff that solves problems! A yen to make an impact was core to my upbringing having grown up surrounded by my family of doctors, educators, and social changemakers.
I was lucky enough to land a job at a software company in Chennai, India that steered me to a job at Microsoft in Denver. I worked my way up the engineering ladder at various software companies in Silicon Valley and later transitioned into Product Management, Strategy, and Design. What I’ve loved the most about my work is talking to people and seeing their eyes light up when my team delivers something that solves a problem! It’s still the most rewarding part of my job.
In my free time, I love hanging out with my dog, Kai, cooking and feeding friends, reading, solving jigsaw puzzles, and more recently, dabbling in watercolor.
Why did you join the Wheel team?
I joined Wheel in August 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. Wheel’s special commitment to its mission, people, and core values struck me from the very first interview and continues to shape my Wheelie life. Being part of a purpose-led organization and making an impact was a key motivation for joining Wheel.
As with any startup, each day is different and interesting at Wheel. A key component of my day-to-day is working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that we are empowering our team to build the most impactful solutions we can. (We’re hiring!)
What’s your recent Wheel Moment of Reward?
At Wheel we use a modern technology stack that allows us to build and launch delightful, frictionless experiences, quickly and iteratively! The experience we create and the products we deliver are informed by direct feedback from clinicians whom we speak to almost every day.
Earlier this year, we launched Wheel’s clinician experience - a single location where clinicians could manage their virtual health care practice (across multiple clients) and deliver care. This was one of the momentous product launches last year and I’m excited to extend this experience in the future. The clinician platform allows clinicians to manage their virtual care practice (credentials, quality, training, schedules) and deliver the highest quality from a single place. It empowers clinicians to be the boss of their schedule, earnings, and areas they want to treat.
Working alongside Wheelies is the best part of coming to work each day! There is a great sense of humility and community at Wheel, a willingness to collaborate and debate how we’re solving problems, and a dedication to delivering the best experience for clinicians and innovative companies together.
One of the most rewarding aspects of work is talking to clinicians and hearing how Wheel offers flexibility, gives them control over their earnings & schedule, and creates experiences that make it easier for them to deliver high-quality care.
What do you think the future of healthcare holds?
The future holds so many exciting possibilities.
Most recently, there has been a dramatic consolidation of incumbents in the market. This lays the pathway for more innovative, API-first and open tech companies that enable deeper integrations to create a healthcare infrastructure and connected solutions that offer more comprehensive care. Adopting new technology stacks and frameworks enables us to launch secure and compliant platforms faster than ever before.
Innovative companies in healthcare and adjacent industries have created a new generation of consumers that demand more. More access to their data, humanized and personalized experiences that build trust, immediate access when they want it, and more. This will inspire us to deliver better solutions.
Digital health began its journey with low acuity, urgent care solutions. The pandemic has forced us to make a shift to further these solutions to provide more holistic solutions and prioritize longitudinal care. Integrating remote patient monitoring, at-home labs & diagnostics, and migrating to an omnichannel/hybrid model of care will unlock great healthcare for everyone.
... and finally, putting the focus on clinicians! At Wheel we believe Happier Clinicians = Healthier Patients. Our clinician-focused experience offers the opportunity for a symbiotic combination of technology and humanity. Creating frictionless, don’t-make-me-think technology allows clinicians to focus on what they do best - empathize with the patient and deliver the best possible health outcomes.
Personally, I am most motivated and excited about how digital healthcare unlocks access to underserved communities and breaks down barriers to care - in the US and globally.
I am excited and optimistic about the future of healthcare and how we can lean into multiplicative effects of technology to make a great impact on patients, clinicians, and society.
