How to Become a Remote Nurse Practitioner in South Carolina

As a licensed nurse practitioner, there are many remote work opportunities available throughout South Carolina. Whether you live in Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, or anywhere else in the state, there is a need for part-time, full-time, and per-diem NPs.

If you are interested in a role as a work-from-home nurse practitioner (also referred to as a telemedicine nurse practitioner), keep the following information in mind as you apply for positions:

  • Work-from-home nurse practitioner or remote nurse practitioner: As a remote NP, you can broaden your potential employer pool because you don’t need to commute to your job. You will either work from your home or at a specified off-site location. While most remote nurse practitioners do the majority of their work at home, some employers have on-site requirements for patient care or other work at their healthcare facility.

  • Additional training: Working remotely does not alter the standard of care requirements you must follow. Telemedicine companies will require you to train on related topics, including relevant technology and platforms. They may also provide training on best practices for good webside manner.

  • Necessary documentation: It’s wise to keep your resume, licenses and other professional documentation updated and at the ready.

Telehealth companies often post open positions on job posting sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn, so this is a great place to start your job search for virtual care opportunities. Wheel matches clinicians with virtual care opportunities and has a variety of positions available for NPs in South Carolina.

South Carolina Nurse Practitioner FAQs

What are the nurse practitioner schools in South Carolina?

Several South Carolina institutions offer accredited nurse practitioner courses. These include Anderson University, Clemson University, University of South Carolina, Francis Marion University, and Anderson University. Several offer remote learning capabilities, and some present their entire curricula via distance learning.

What are the accelerated nursing programs in SC?

There are three accelerated nursing programs in South Carolina, at The Medical University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and Anderson University. These allow people with non-nursing degrees to quickly become qualified in nursing. After this, it's possible to enter further education as an APRN and become eligible for a nurse practitioner license.

Can a nurse practitioner have their own practice in South Carolina?

In South Carolina, any nurse practitioner running their own practice must have a strict written protocol, signed by a local physician. The protocol should dictate how the NP consults with the physician, and the ways in which medical services are eligible for delegation to the NP.

In what states can NPs practice independently? Is South Carolina among them?

Only full-practice-authority states permit completely independent practice by NPs. South Carolina is a restricted-practice authority state, but the state legislature expanded the scope of NP responsibility and changed the wording around physician supervision. While a written agreement is still necessary, the rewording gives South Carolina NPs more independence to serve remote communities.

Are there part-time NP remote jobs in South Carolina?

South Carolina has ample remote, part-time work opportunities for NPs. Many healthcare employers will provide training in their systems and tools, and some may request a minimum number of on-site hours per week. You can apply for both part-time and full-time remote nurse practitioner jobs through Wheel.

What can nurse practitioners do remotely in South Carolina?

South Carolina NPs have a range of remote options available. They can consult remotely within the fields of primary care, mental health, and women's health, and NPs are highly valuable in work-from-home roles in pharmaceutical sales and legal nurse consulting. How to become a nurse practitioner in South Carolina?

A South Carolina NP will need an RN license that permits practice in South Carolina (including a multi-state license), a specialized master's degree, and national credentialing from an accredited certifying body.
