Like much of the United States, Colorado is facing a crisis-level shortage of physicians, particularly in rural regions. Without enough doctors, many Coloradans face long wait times and are not receiving appropriate care for their health needs.

The shortage has created a growing need for newly minted physicians in the Centennial State. If you’re looking for the flexibility to work from home, telehealth physicians are in high demand. Read on to learn about the requirements to become a remote physician in Colorado.

How To Become a Remote Physician in Colorado

If you’re interested in practicing virtual care, know that telehealth physicians are expected to adhere to the same standards (and need the same qualifications) as clinicians who treat patients in person. You must go to medical school and follow the traditional training path for physicians.

Once you earn your degrees and become either a board-eligible or board-certified doctor, you can apply for one of the many telemedicine physician jobs open in Colorado.

Below are the steps to follow to become a remote physician in Colorado:

  • Education: Once you earn a bachelor’s degree, the next step toward becoming a virtual care physician is to earn a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.

  • Exams: At the end of your medical degree program, you’re ready to take the first portion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Passing this exam is necessary to become a licensed physician.

  • Residency: After obtaining a medical degree, it’s time to choose a specialty and apply for residency programs. Telehealth companies often seek physicians with specialties in internal medicine, emergency medicine, and family medicine, as they usually treat a wide range of health conditions and patient demographics.

  • Become licensed to practice medicine in Colorado: You’ll need to take the final portion of the USMLE exam in order to legally practice medicine in Colorado. Individuals on the path to become a Doctor of Osteopathic medicine must pass the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA). The last step is to submit an application for physician licensure to the Colorado State medical board, as well as a $412 application fee.

  • Board certification: To become a board-certified MD or DO, you must take and pass the ABMS exam. Note that some telemedicine companies require their physicians to be board certified.

Requirements for Remote Physicians in Colorado

Becoming a telemedicine physician in Colorado allows you to work from home and maintain a flexible schedule. If you want to also practice in an office, seeing patients virtually on your off hours can be a great way to supplement your income. An array of full-time and part-time remote work opportunities are available in Colorado for MDs and DOs.

Once you are licensed and become a board-certified physician, you can determine which type of telehealth position suits your needs whether you live in Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, or elsewhere in the state.

Before applying to virtual care jobs, you should be aware of the following:

  • Work-from-home physicians: Remote physicians are held to the same standards and quality of care as their peers who practice in an in-person facility. One of the main differences is the method in which virtual care physicians meet with their patients. When practicing telemedicine, physicians use technology to conduct consultations virtually via synchronous (video or phone) and asynchronous (chat) visits. Note that by law, you’re only allowed to treat patients who are physically located in the state where you are licensed.

  • Additional training: The standard of patient care in telemedicine is the same as for in-person care, and you don’t need to complete any state-mandated training to treat patients remotely. However, you may want to take advantage of onboarding sessions offered by telemedicine companies that teach clinicians how to use relevant technology and platforms. These also typically include best practices for good webside manner.

  • Necessary documentation: When applying for virtual care opportunities, be sure to update your resume and provide appropriate documentation verifying your education and credentials.

If you’re seeking a role as a remote physician, check job posting sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn. Telemedicine companies that are hiring often post to these sites, so they’re a great place to start your search for virtual care opportunities.
