How to Become a Remote Nurse Practitioner in Michigan

As a certified nurse practitioner in Michigan, you can now choose to explore the many job opportunities across the state, from Detroit to Grand Rapids, Lansing to Ann Arbor. These include the full-time and part-time remote work opportunities available, including telemedicine.

If you want to become a remote nurse practitioner (also referred to as a telemedicine nurse practitioner) or work-at-home nurse practitioner, here’s what you should know first:

  • Remote nurse practitioner or work-from-home nurse practitioner: These nurse practitioners can live outside the area of the health care institution in which they work. There may be some on-site patient care or other tasks at the health care provider’s facility.
  • Additional training: The standard of patient care in telehealth is the same as in-person care. While there is no state-mandated training specific to virtual care, telehealth companies often provide training to educate clinicians on how to use various technologies and platforms. They may also train you on best practices for good bedside manner.
  • Documentation: When applying for remote jobs, be sure to include an updated resume as well as proper documentation of your credentials and education.

Telehealth companies often post open positions on job posting sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn, so this is a great place to start looking for virtual care opportunities. Michigan Nurse Practitioner FAQs

What are the nursing practitioner programs in Michigan?

Many of Michigan's higher education institutes offer accredited nursing practitioner programs. Can a nurse practitioner have their own practice in Michigan?

In Michigan, NPs cannot practice without physician supervision. They can only fulfill tasks delegated by a physician and cannot independently run their own practice. A physician must also delegate the prescription of scheduled drugs to an NP, although NPs can prescribe nonscheduled drugs without supervision.

In what states can NPs practice independently? Is Michigan one of them?

Independent practice is possible for NPs in full-practice-authority states. Michigan is a restricted-practice-authority state, meaning that independent NP practice is not possible. NPs are only allowed to fulfill medical functions delegated by a physician that fall within the NP's scope of practice. To learn more about how this works, read our clinician FAQs.

Are there part-time NP remote jobs in Michigan?

Part-time remote NP jobs are available in Michigan to those who prefer working from home or another location other than a medical facility.
