How to Become a Remote Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts

Once you earn your nurse practitioner license, you can begin to apply for full-time and part-time remote work opportunities in Massachusetts. Many roles will be in Boston, but also look to cities and towns like Worcester, Brewster, and Salem in your job search.

If you are interested in becoming a remote nurse practitioner (also known as a telemedicine nurse practitioner) or work-at-home nurse practitioner, here’s what you should know first:

  • Work-from-home nurse practitioner or remote nurse practitioner: In this role, you can live outside of the area of the hiring medical center or healthcare provider. The position may include some onsite work and patient care, but you will primarily telecommute.
    • Also, once you complete two years of physician-supervised practice, you can practice independently.

  • Additional training: Nurse practitioners may need to complete additional training to successfully work in remote roles. This may include computer systems, safety protocols, and privacy mandates training, as well as proper bedside manner.

  • Necessary documentation: All employers want proof of your education, certification, and licensure. Keep that information handy to quickly and efficiently apply for relevant jobs, and to converse about your potential new job title.

Telehealth companies often post open positions on job posting and staffing sites such as Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn, so this is a great place to start looking for virtual care opportunities. Wheel matches clinicians with virtual care opportunities and has a variety of positions available for NPs in Massachusetts.
