Profiles in Telehealth: Veronica Haslam - Clinician Advocate

Veronica began her career at a high-end department store as a fashion buyer and has since made a place for herself in healthcare recruiting. Learn more about Veronica's journey and why she loves working with the Wheel Team!

What’s your role at Wheel?

I am a Clinician Advocate at Wheel. Every day I get a chance to speak with clinicians who are passionate about healthcare and want to expand their practice into telemedicine. It’s my job to make sure they know that they are in great hands and that they are at the front of everything we do here at Wheel. I’m motivated to help them achieve work-life balance while they extend their practice online to help more patients

What’s your background? What did you do before working with Wheel?

I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009 with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. I loved the creative aspect of retail and have always enjoyed talking with people. After graduation from UT Austin, I married my high school sweetheart and followed him to law school in Tulsa, OK. I started my career as a buyer for a small, high-end 100-year-old department store located in Tulsa. Once my husband graduated from law school, I found myself in yet another new city, searching for something I was passionate about. I stumbled upon recruiting and I haven’t looked back since then. My first recruiting position was with a chemical distribution start-up located in Houston, TX. I learned so much during my 3 years there, but once I started my family I knew I wanted a change and challenge. That’s when I made the change to healthcare recruiting, and it has been incredibly fulfilling!

I began my healthcare recruiting journey with a large, multi-state hospital network doing clinical recruiting for all Texas acute care units. I stayed in that position for 3.5 years until I learned about telemedicine -- specifically Wheel-- and how they are changing the way healthcare works. And I KNEW I needed to be a part of this immensely talented, creative, and hard-working team!

Outside of work, I enjoy being with my two crazy kids (4 years and 2 years old) and husband, traveling, cooking, riding my Peloton, interior design (especially mid-century modern), wine, watching movies, reading, and sleeping/napping/relaxing when I get the chance!

Why did you join the Wheel team?

I joined Wheel in February 2020, 4 weeks before lockdown (crazy timing, huh?) What a time to join telemedicine! It has been nothing but exhilarating, to say the least!

I joined Wheel not only because I enjoy clinical recruiting but because I saw a need to help clinicians. Everyone I spoke with at Wheel was so engaged and focused on the clinician-first mission, that it was hard to pass up an opportunity to work with this passionate group of innovative thinkers.

Every day I am tasked with strategically onboarding clinicians so that they are matched with amazing telemedicine opportunities that provide them the best experience.

What’s your recent Wheel Moment of Reward?

The culture at Wheel is amazing! It is truly a team effort and everyone is willing to help each other out. The team is always open to learning and asking questions. Leadership empowers everyone to pursue their ideas or to amend or create a new process. The fact that I can have an idea and also have a team ready to jump on it to make it a reality is extremely satisfying! Right now, we are building a specialty network of providers and even though everyone is insanely busy, we all find time to help each other, make each other laugh, and acknowledge how much we appreciate one other. It is incredibly rewarding!

What do you think the future of healthcare holds?

I feel like we are at a pivotal time for telemedicine. Now that telemedicine is becoming more “normal,” the possibilities are endless. There are so many amazing ways to utilize technology to support clinicians and provide amazing patient care. The most exciting thing is that Wheel is at the center of all of it!

Thanks, Veronica, for sharing your thoughts and being an essential member of the #WheelCareTeam!
